NTN Precision Crossed Roller Bearing Seal Performance: Essential Testing Protocols

Bearing Selection Criteria for High-Speed Rotary Tables
When validating the seal integrity of an NTN precision crossed roller bearing, the first step is to match the bearing model to the application’s rotational speed and load spectrum. Use the NTN-SNR digital catalogue to filter for crossed roller types with built-in labyrinth or contact seals, then short-list only those whose dynamic load rating C/P ≥ 4. This guarantees that the subsequent seal test is performed under realistic elastic deformation, not exaggerated clearance conditions.
Bearing Test Rig Design and Environmental Simulation
Build a closed-loop test rig whose spindle run-out ≤ 1 µm and whose housing temperature can be cycled from –30 °C to +120 °C. Mount the bearing in a vertical axis orientation to mimic the most common robotic-arm pivot point. Inject ISO VG 68 turbine oil at 0.3 MPa through the inner ring’s lubrication hole while maintaining a 2 bar over-pressure of synthetic dust (ISO 12103-A2) in the chamber. This dual contamination route accelerates any seal breach within 48 h instead of weeks of field duty.
Bearing Seal Leakage Measurement Protocol
Every 6 h, pause the rig, cool to 25 °C, and weigh the bearing assembly on a 0.1 mg-resolution balance. Subtract tare mass to obtain net oil loss; a value > 5 mg indicates seal failure. Simultaneously, collect deposited dust on a 0.8 µm membrane filter downstream of the rig; gravimetric dust ingress > 1 mg is also a reject criterion. Record both metrics in a control chart with ±3σ limits derived from five pre-tested reference NTN sealed bearings.
Bearing Friction Torque Signature Analysis
Fit a 0.05 N·m-capacity rotary torque sensor between the motor and the bearing housing. Log data at 1 kHz while ramping speed from 10 rpm to 3 000 rpm in 200 rpm steps. A sudden torque spike ≥ 0.2 N·m above the polynomial baseline often precedes visible seal leakage by 4–6 h, giving an early warning window. Store the torque spectrum as a CSV file tagged with the unique bearing serial number for traceability.
Bearing Post-Test Tear-Down Inspection
After 200 h or upon alarm, remove the bearing under Class 100 clean-room conditions. Photograph the seal lip at 50× magnification; look for radial cracks > 30 µm or lip reversal. Next, clean the bearing in an ultrasonic bath of n-heptane for 5 min, dry with nitrogen, and inspect the raceways for corrosion spots. Any brown staining inside the ball track invalidates the seal rating even if oil loss was marginal.
Bearing Data Reporting and Acceptance Matrix

Compile the above metrics into a one-page certificate that states: “NTN precision crossed roller bearing seal performance meets IP-66 equivalence when oil loss ≤ 5 mg, dust ingress ≤ 1 mg, torque deviation ≤ 0.2 N·m, and zero raceway corrosion after 200 h accelerated test.” Attach raw data, photos, and rig calibration log. Only bearings that pass all four checkpoints receive the green “Seal-OK” sticker and are released for high-duty robot joints or medical CT gantries.
